COUNTERFEIT CHRISTIANITY: AN ENEMY FROM WITHIN

By Olisaemeka Maduka

Acts 19:11–20

Not everything that looks like Christianity is Christianity. We can know the right words, participate in Christian activities, and even appear spiritual, yet lack a genuine relationship with Christ. The danger of counterfeit Christianity is that it can look so convincing that we mistake the appearance of faith for the real thing.

In Acts 19:11–20, the seven sons of Sceva attempted to cast out demons by invoking the name of Jesus whom Paul preached. They wanted to use His name without knowing Him. But Jesus is not a name to be used as a formula; He is Lord, and genuine Christianity begins with Him.

Counterfeit Christianity wants the benefits of Christ without the surrender that comes with belonging to Him. Genuine faith, however, produces transformation. We see this when people in Ephesus confessed their sins and abandoned their former practices. They did not merely add Christianity to their lives; their response to the gospel changed their lives' direction.

This does not mean Christians become sinless, but that God's grace produces a growing desire to turn from sin and obey His Word. As the passage concludes, the Word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily (Acts 19:20). The focus was not on spectacle, personal gain, or human recognition, but on the name of Jesus and the power of His Word.

So, what is your faith resting on? Church attendance, Christian activities, spiritual experiences, or Christ Himself? We cannot earn salvation through our works, but genuine faith leaves us changed.

May we never settle for the appearance of Christianity while missing its reality. May our lives testify that we belong to Christ, and may His name, not ours, be magnified.
