How Do You Bear Fruit For God?
By Olisaemeka Maduka
A Christian is called to bear fruit for God. But how?
Our first instinct is often to try harder. Pray more. Do better. Be more disciplined. Try harder to obey. But Romans 7:1–6 points us somewhere else.
Paul reminds us that we have died to the law through Christ and now belong to Him. We are no longer serving “in the old way of the written code” but “in the new way of the Spirit” (Romans 7:6).
The law could show us our sin, but it could never give us the power to overcome it. It could tell us what righteousness looks like, but it could not produce a righteous heart in us. That is why the gospel is not something we graduate from after conversion. We need it every day.
Fruit is produced by life. A branch does not produce fruit by straining itself to manufacture something. It bears fruit because it is connected to the vine.
In the same way, Christian fruitfulness is not ultimately about how hard we can try to look like Christ. It is about remaining dependent on Christ and walking by His Spirit. What God has done in us produces what God desires from us.
So when you see impatience, pride, selfishness, bitterness, or disobedience in your life, the answer is not simply, “Try harder.” Run back to the gospel. Remember who you are in Christ. Depend on the Spirit who is at work in you.
The question is not merely, “Am I trying hard enough to bear fruit?”
It is, “Am I depending on Christ?”
Because fruit for God does not grow from self-reliance. It grows from a life surrendered to Christ and empowered by His Spirit.
