Living Between Groaning and Glory

1. Our Present Groaning

In Haggai 2:3, God acknowledges the people's feelings of discouragement regarding the new temple's glory compared to Solomon's temple. He affirms their assessment that the current temple appears as nothing. This acknowledgment is crucial as it highlights the reality of their emotional state, allowing them to confront their feelings rather than dismiss them. God does not want indifference; He desires His people to recognize the pain of their current situation, which is essential for understanding the promise of future glory.

2. His Covenant Presence

In verses 4-5, God commands the people to be strong, work, and not fear because He is with them. This assurance is based on the covenant made during their exodus from Egypt. God's presence is not contingent on the temple's grandeur but is rooted in His faithfulness. The people are reminded that their efforts are not to earn God's presence but are a response to the reality that He is already with them. This truth serves as a powerful encouragement to continue their work despite feelings of inadequacy.

3. Our Setting Glory

In verses 6-9, God promises that the latter glory of the temple will surpass the former. This promise points to a future fulfillment where God will shake the heavens and the earth, bringing treasures from all nations to fill His house with glory. The ultimate fulfillment of this promise is seen in the coming of Christ and the establishment of His eternal kingdom, where God will dwell with His people. This hope encourages believers to persevere through present sufferings, knowing that the glory to come far outweighs current trials.

4. The Importance of Perspective

The comparison between past and present can lead to discouragement, but believers are called to focus on the future glory that awaits them. The struggles and trials of this life are temporary, and the promise of eternal life with God provides hope and motivation to endure. Understanding that our present suffering is not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed helps believers to maintain their faith and strength in challenging times.

5. Living with Purpose

Believers are encouraged to live actively in their faith, being strong, working diligently, and fearing not because of God's covenant presence. This active faith is essential in navigating the tension between current struggles and future hope. The assurance of God's presence empowers believers to continue their work for His kingdom, knowing that they are not alone in their efforts.
