Consecration and Corruption

Introduction to Consecration

Consecration refers to the act of setting something apart for a sacred purpose. In the context of our study, it highlights the importance of being holy and dedicated to God's service. The story of Samuel illustrates this concept, as he was dedicated to the Lord from a young age, demonstrating the significance of parental guidance in modeling a life of service to God.

Consecration is Partly Our Work

While God ultimately sets apart individuals for His purposes, there is a human responsibility in the process of consecration. Parents play a crucial role in teaching and modeling a life of holiness for their children. Samuel's upbringing, where his mother brought him a robe each year, exemplifies how parents can actively participate in their children's spiritual growth by demonstrating a commitment to worship and service.

Consecration is Rewarding

Choosing a life of consecration often requires sacrifices, but it is ultimately rewarding. Hannah's dedication of Samuel resulted in her receiving more children from God. The notion that serving the Lord leads to loss is a lie; rather, it brings blessings, both in this life and the next. Jesus affirmed this by stating that those who leave everything for His sake will receive abundant rewards.

Understanding Corruption

Corruption, as seen in the lives of Eli's sons, is progressive and stubborn. Their actions reflect a long-standing pattern of sin that ultimately leads to their downfall. Eli's attempts to advise his sons highlight the futility of mere advice when faced with deep-seated corruption. The text emphasizes that their refusal to listen was a sign of God's judgment upon them.

The Consequences of Corruption

Corruption leads to spiritual decay and separation from God. Eli's sons, despite their roles as priests, were unrepentant and ultimately faced God's judgment. This serves as a warning that persistent sin can harden hearts and lead to a lack of repentance. The importance of recognizing the seriousness of sin is underscored, as it can have eternal consequences.

Conclusion: Living in the Presence of the Lord

As we reflect on the lives of Samuel and Eli's sons, we are reminded of the importance of living in a way that is pleasing to God. Samuel grew in favor with both God and man, illustrating the blessings that come from a life dedicated to the Lord. We are called to pursue holiness and to be mindful of the impact our lives have on others, especially our children.
