Consider Your Ways: A Study of Haggai Chapter 1

1. Consider Your Excuses

In Haggai 1:1-2, the people of Israel express that it is not yet time to rebuild the house of the Lord. This reflects a common tendency among believers to create excuses for their disobedience. They blame their inactivity on external circumstances, suggesting that if God truly wanted them to rebuild, He would not have allowed opposition to arise. This procrastination reveals a deeper issue of prioritization and a lack of commitment to God's commands.

2. Consider Your Priorities

Haggai challenges the people in verses 3-4, questioning why they prioritize their own luxurious homes while God's house lies in ruins. This shift in priorities indicates a comfort-seeking attitude that places personal desires above spiritual obligations. Believers today must examine their lives to see if they are investing more time and resources into personal comforts rather than the work of God.

3. Consider Your Poverty

In verses 5-11, Haggai points out that despite their efforts, the people are experiencing dissatisfaction and lack. They have much but are never satisfied, indicating a spiritual poverty despite material wealth. This serves as a reminder that true fulfillment comes from God, not from worldly possessions. The frustrations they face are a divine discipline meant to redirect their focus back to Him.

4. Consider Christ

Haggai's message ultimately points to the need for Christ. Unlike the people who sought comfort, Christ left His heavenly home to dwell among us in our brokenness. He offers true satisfaction and fulfillment that the world cannot provide. Believers are called to reflect on their relationship with Christ and ensure He remains the center of their lives.

5. Consider Your Response

In verses 12-15, the people respond to Haggai's message with obedience and fear of the Lord. This highlights the importance of not just hearing God's word but acting upon it. The call to respond is crucial; it is not enough to acknowledge our shortcomings without taking steps to realign our lives with God's will.
