Training Ourselves in Godliness
The Indwelling Spirit
The Holy Spirit indwells believers, changing our motives and empowering us to obey God's commands. However, it is essential to recognize that while the Spirit provides strength, we must actively work out our faith. This involves personal responsibility and intentional training in godliness.
The Importance of Training in Godliness
Training ourselves in godliness is crucial because it promises benefits in both this life and the life to come. Paul emphasizes that godliness leads to better relationships and success in our endeavors. Many struggle to believe this truth, which hinders their commitment to spiritual training.
Word and Prayer
Engaging with the Word of God involves both regular Bible reading and focused Bible study. Bible reading provides broad exposure to Scripture, while Bible study allows for deeper understanding. Both practices should be incorporated into our daily routines. Prayer is equally vital; it is a means of expressing our dependence on God and should be a constant part of our lives, not just a response to crises.
Churchmanship
A true churchman is dedicated to their local church, which involves both attendance and active participation. Attendance should be treated as non-negotiable, similar to a job. Participation means engaging during services and using one's gifts to serve the church community. Both aspects are essential for spiritual growth and accountability.
Accountability and Mutual Care
Accountability involves taking responsibility for one another's spiritual well-being. It has both positive and corrective aspects. Proactively encouraging one another in love and good works is essential, as is addressing sin when it arises. Building genuine relationships based on care and concern fosters an environment where accountability can thrive.
Practical Steps for Growth
- Set a realistic Bible reading and study plan, aiming for consistency over intensity.
- Engage in prayer daily, using frameworks like ACT (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) to enrich your prayer life.
- Make church attendance a priority and arrive early, prepared with your Bible and notes.
- Participate actively in church services and use your gifts to serve the community.
- Establish accountability relationships within the church to encourage spiritual growth and support.
